Natural Remedies for preventing colds and Flu

Although prevention is better than a cure sometimes we all still fall prey to the dreaded cold.

Don’t despair, there are some great natural remedies out there that can help get rid of your cold faster, and the great news is they are the same ones that can be also used to prevent it.

The common cold can be caused by over 200 different viruses and is highly contagious. It will usually last for 7-10 days but reoccuring symptoms may indicate a lowered immune system, too much stress and often not enough sleep (which we are all guilty of with such busy lives).

It can also be a challenge if more than one of your family members are affected as it can often just go round in circles so it is very important to make sure the whole family is taking the same thing to prevent this.

ECHINACEA

This popular herb has been used by the Native Americans for hundreds of years, originally found in North America there are various varieties now found on most continents of the world.

Echinacea increases levels if properdin, a chemical within your body that activated that immune system. It  also has antibacterial effects which makes it a great herb for treating all kinds of viruses and baterical infections.

GARLIC

This pungent herb was highly regarded by the ancient Egyptians, a daily does was given to the slaves building the pyramids to prevent illness. Romans also found acknowledged the healing powers of this herb as they gave regular doses to their soldiers before battle.

The reason that garlic is so highly regarded is due to several helpful compounds, including allicin, one of the most potent antibiotics amongst plant species.

Garlic combines well with echinacea to create a powerful antibacterial fighting force against infection.

GINGER

Ginger is another of natures’ antiviral herbs. It contains nearly a dozen antiviral compounds. Ginger is pain relieving, antiseptic and antioxidant.

It is valuable for preventing and treating colds, sore throats and inflammation of mucus membranes. Ginger reduces pain and fever and has a mild sedative effect that will encourage rest.

ASTRAGALUS

The root of the Astragalus plant has been used in Tradtional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years as a tonic or “adaptogen”; it is commonly used to treat colds and flu, persistant infections, recurrent respitory infections, viral infections and glandular fever. It does this by enhancing the immune funcation via stimulation of monocytes and macrophages, T-Cell acitivity and interferon production. It has also been shown to exhibit antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity.
